The diagram to the left shows a typical Internet AMR/demand control installation.
Internet
The gateway has an RJ-45 connection for connecting to any Ethernet network.
This connection can be made using a cable modem, 802.11wireless or other network device.
IES also had a residential IP gateway that also has an RJ-45 connection. The gateway
transmits data using HTTP to the IES server. The IES server sends back any necessary
information in the HTTP response. The residential IP gateway is polled by the IES server
using TCP/IP. IES does not provide cable modems or other IP network equipment as part of its
offering.
The IES IP gateways support DHCP, which means they’re network addresses can be dynamically
configured. This significantly reduces the required management of these devices. Since
IES residential IP gateways are polled, the server must know the IP address of the gateway.
To make this work, the IES residential IP gateways transmit their IP address to the IES
server upon boot-up or if a new IP address is assigned.
